Mike Luna: A Story of Redemption, Calling, and Brotherhood in Christ
For many years, Mike Luna’s life was a storm, filled with turbulence, rebellion, and regret. Raised in a broken home in San Diego, abandoned by his father, and living in poverty, he grew up feeling neglected, confused, and angry. His mother did all she could to provide, but despair was never far away.
Yet, even in the darkest moments, God was there.
At 15 years old, Mike first encountered the Gospel. The seed was planted. Though his family did not believe, his hunger for truth led him to ride his moped five miles to church every Sunday—a teenager drawn by the Holy Spirit’s pull toward Jesus.
But the world’s temptations were strong. Without guidance or support, he drifted away. For years, he lived a life far from the church, far from faith, and far from the man God had called him to be.
Then, something happened. God called him back.
Through Lutheran pastors preaching law and gospel online—through podcasts and teachings— the heart of this airplane mechanic was shaken and repaired. He had always known the Bible, but the grace-centered message spoke to him in a way he had never experienced before. He saw Jesus more clearly. He heard the call.
And this time, he answered.
A Place to Belong
When he stepped into Holy Cross Lutheran Church in San Diego, he wasn’t sure what to expect. What he found was hospitality, love, and mentoring—exactly what he had been missing for so long. This, he knew, was where God had placed him.
“I have no doubt that my home church and family are where God has called me to be,” Mike reflects. “To grow in grace, to learn, and to love others in Jesus’ name.”
But his calling wasn’t just about his own transformation. God was leading him to reach others—especially men who are now where he once was.
A Ministry to Men Who Need Jesus
Mike’s heart burns for broken men—those struggling with addiction, shame, and directionless lives. He has walked that road. He knows the pain, the regrets, the hopelessness. And he knows the way out.
That’s why he is leading a new men’s discipleship group at his congregation—a band of brothers, as he says—creating a space for real conversations about faith, struggle, and redemption. One of the first fruits of this initiative was fostering deeper communion among the men in his church, especially after it merged with another congregation to form Hope Lutheran Church. He recognized the need for men to truly know one another beyond Sunday morning interactions. Already, camaraderie, trust, and fellowship are growing through these encounters.
But the most important aspect of the group is its mission to reach men disconnected from faith, especially those broken and isolated—just as Mike once was. “I know there are so many people out in the world that are being ripped off by the spirit of this age,” Mike says. “They are hungry for truth. They just need some love and guidance.”
That’s exactly what he’s offering. Not just in group gatherings, but also through one-on-one mentoring—something he is doing with Ruben, Jhony, and his son-in-law, Jose. The journey has not been without hardship. Last year, he lost a dear friend he was trying to rescue from the darkness of San Diego’s streets. The pain tested his faith, yet it also deepened his reliance on Christ.
Mike’s past doesn’t define him—his redemption does. And now, he is offering that same hope to others. His daughter, Karina, couldn't be more proud of the man he has become and is still becoming. She has witnessed firsthand his transformation, seeing not only the change in him but also the impact he is making in the lives of others. Through his faith and commitment, he is showing her—and the world—what it means to be a man of God.
The Role of Lutheran Mission Society San Diego
Mike credits Lutheran Mission Society San Diego as a vital part of his journey. Their mentorship and encouragement have been instrumental in his discernment and growth. They have provided opportunities for theological education, training, and a supportive community that has helped him step into his calling with confidence.
Mike Luna’s story is still being written. His journey from brokenness to redemption is a testament to God’s relentless grace. As he continues to walk this path, he remains steadfast in his mission: to bring the hope of Jesus to men who desperately need it.
