At Balboa Military Hospital, where wounded service members face both physical and emotional recovery, a new ministry has been launched to bring the hope and healing of the Gospel to those who serve. Led by Deacon Mark Kunkee, and sent by Trinity Lutheran Church, this ministry began in August 2025 with a clear mission: to support, encourage, and spiritually guide the brave men and women known as “wounded warriors.”
Every Monday night, Deacon Kunkee hosts Bible study sessions tailored to the unique experiences and struggles of military patients. These gatherings provide a safe and supportive environment where participants can explore Scripture, reflect on God’s promises, and find encouragement in their faith journeys. Beyond the classroom setting, Deacon Kunkee engages in one-on-one pastoral conversations and counseling, helping individuals process trauma, navigate personal challenges, and experience the sustaining presence of Christ in the midst of their recovery.
This ministry flows from the vision of Trinity Lutheran Church to care for those in the margins of society and the military community. By combining Bible teaching, prayer, and pastoral support, the ministry fosters both spiritual growth and emotional resilience. It seeks not only to meet immediate needs but to cultivate long-term connections, ensuring that each wounded warrior experiences the love of God, the strength of Christian fellowship, and the hope of renewal. The ministry also opens doors for future outreach, potentially extending support to family members, caregivers, and other veterans, creating a holistic network of care anchored in faith.
