Mission Field Now Stories | Raquel

It was not a campaign.

It was not an event.

It was not a missionary strategy.

It was a visit with diapers.

Some time ago we shared with you the story of Tere, one of the missionaries connected with the Lutheran Mission Society San Diego, who faithfully serves at A Thousand Generations Ministries in Tijuana. Today we want to share a small story that has grown out of that quiet ministry—one of those stories that might easily go unnoticed, yet reveals the very heart of mission.

It all began with a simple request: someone needed diapers for an elderly person.

In the middle of that practical need, something else arose in Tere’s heart:

“I want to go see her.”

That day she did not go alone. Her husband Sadoc, who also serves alongside her in this mission, went with her. Together they arrived at the home of Raquel, a 92-year-old woman who was already confined to her bed and living the final chapters of her life.

When Tere spoke, Raquel recognized her voice.

That moment opened the door to something deeper than a simple visit. There, in a modest room, something happened that the Church has done for centuries: God was spoken of, sins were confessed, forgiveness was proclaimed, and the hope we have in Christ was shared clearly.

But something unexpected also happened.

Before they finished, Raquel asked to pray… and she began praying for them.

They had come to serve, yet somehow they left having been served.

With the kind of wisdom that often comes after many years of walking with God, Raquel said something simple:

“You need it more out there.”

Two weeks later, Raquel passed away in peace.

We do not know everything that happened in Raquel’s heart during those final weeks. But we do know this: she heard the Gospel clearly. She heard about forgiveness in Christ. She asked for prayer. She received prayer. And she departed from this life in her home.

That is grace.

Stories like this remind us of something essential about mission. Often we imagine mission through large projects, programs, or strategies. Yet many times the Kingdom of God advances in a much quieter way:

arriving without noise,

serving with simplicity,

proclaiming Christ with clarity,

and entrusting the results to God.

This is often how the Lord works.

Through a visit.

Through a conversation.

Through a moment that may seem small… yet may carry eternal weight.

Thank you for supporting Tere’s missionary work—and Sadoc’s as well—in Tijuana. Stories like Raquel’s are part of the fruit that God continues to bring through this ministry.

And sometimes they begin in the simplest way:

with a visit…

and a package of diapers.
