Together in the Mission of Christ | 2026
Sunday April 26 at Redeemer by the Sea Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Laymen’s League Sunshine Zone hosted “Together in the Mission of Christ: Celebrating Ministries in San Diego.” No stage lights, no big production—just a room full of people paying attention to what God is actually doing across our county.
The idea is simple: give ministry leaders the mic and let them speak plainly about their work. What’s real, what’s hard, what’s growing.
A few years ago, the Lutheran Mission Society of San Diego stood in that same space as one of the first presenters. At that time, there wasn’t much to show—just direction, conviction, and a handful of conversations that hadn’t yet become anything visible.
Now, looking around the room, some of those early conversations have names, faces, and communities attached to them.
We’ve had the privilege of helping launch 19 new ministries and walking alongside 14 existing others. Not as owners, but as companions—trying to notice where God is already at work and support the leaders stepping into it.
That’s what made this Sunday meaningful. Not nostalgia, not even celebration exactly—but recognition.
Recognition of people like Mark Kunkee, Karen Swift, Sheila Foskey, Eleonora Moeller, Kaleena Christensen, Alex Parker, and others who are doing the kind of work that doesn’t always get seen unless someone creates space for it.
This event does that.
And maybe that’s the point—not to amplify ourselves, but to make sure the work happening across the Church doesn’t stay invisible.
Thank you Lou, Dennis, Sue, Melissa, Christina and all of your board/team!
